Mustang Football

SMU football has a storied history, having won multiple conference titles. The team has been to 16 bowl games, securing 8 victories. Known for its “Pony Express” era in the 1980s, when running backs Eric Dickerson and Craig James dominated, SMU has produced several NFL players. The Mustangs also had a period of NCAA sanctions in the late 1980s but have rebounded to remain competitive.

Peruna

The mascot of SMU is Peruna, a live pony who leads the Mustangs onto the field at home games. Peruna’s name comes from a mixture of “peru” and “energetic,” reflecting the school’s spirited atmosphere. The mascot’s presence is a key element of school pride, embodying the energy and determination of the SMU sports programs.
