Red Raiders History
Texas Tech University was founded in 1923 and quickly established itself as a formidable presence in college athletics. The Red Raiders’ programs are funded independently through athletic department revenue.
Red Raiders Football
Texas Tech’s football program, established in 1925, competes in the Big 12 Conference. The team has appeared in 39 bowl games, winning 15. Known for their high-powered offenses, the Red Raiders have produced numerous NFL players. Prominent coaches include Spike Dykes, Mike Leach, and Kliff Kingsbury.
The Masked Rider
The Masked Rider, Texas Tech’s iconic mascot, first appeared in 1954 and has since become a symbol of the university’s fearless spirit. Dressed in black and riding a black horse, the Masked Rider leads the team onto the field before games.
