Bears History

Baylor University, founded in 1845 by The Republic of Texas, is a private Christian university in Waco, Texas. It is the oldest continually operating University in the whole state of Texas.  Its athletic programs, known as the Bears, operate independently of tuition or state funding.  Baylor proudly shares its campus with students from all 50 US states and 90 countries from around the world.

Bears Football

Baylor’s football program, established in 1899, competes in the Big 12 Conference. The Bears have won 13 conference titles and appeared in 27 bowl games, winning 14. Under Coach Art Briles and later Dave Aranda, Baylor achieved significant success, including a Big 12 championship in 2021.

Bruiser and Marigold

Baylor’s mascots, Bruiser and Marigold, are costumed bears that represent the school’s spirit and pride. The university also cares for a live bear named Lady on campus.  Previously another live Bear, named Joy also was housed at the University, but sadly Joy died in July of 2022.
