Nittany Lions History

Pennsylvania State University, founded in 1855, is a premier public university. Its athletic programs, known as the Nittany Lions, are self-sustained.

Nittany Lions Football

Penn State’s football program, established in 1887, competes in the Big Ten Conference. The team claims two national championships (1982, 1986) and has appeared in 51 bowl games, winning 31. Legendary coach Joe Paterno led the program for decades.

The Nittany Lion

The Nittany Lion, Penn State’s costumed mascot, represents the strength and pride of the university. The lion’s legacy stems from the nearby Mount Nittany.
