Wildcats History

The University of Arizona, established in 1885, has a proud athletic tradition. The Wildcats’ programs are supported by athletic department revenue, including ticket sales and media rights, ensuring independence from state funding and tuition.

Wildcats Football

Arizona Wildcats football began in 1899, with the team competing in the Pac-12 Conference. While they have yet to claim a national championship, they have participated in 22 bowl games, winning nine. Notable coaches include Dick Tomey, who led the team to several successful seasons.

Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat

The Wildcats’ mascots, Wilbur and Wilma, are a beloved part of Arizona’s athletic events. First introduced in 1959, these costumed mascots embody the school spirit and represent the team at games and community events.
