Gators History

The University of Florida, founded in 1853, is a leading public institution. Its athletic programs, known as the Gators, are self-funded. The Florida Gators have three Hesiman trophy winners in Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffle and Tim Tebow.

Gators Football

Florida’s football program, established in 1906, is a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Gators claim three national championships (1996, 2006, 2008) and have appeared in over 45 bowl games, winning 24. Legendary coaches include former Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.

Albert and Alberta Gator

Florida’s mascots, Albert and Alberta, are anthropomorphic alligators who bring energy to games and events. Interesting enough, the Florida Gators started using the symbol of the alligator when Austin Miller went to law school at the University of Virginia. Austin chose the alligator because it was native to the state of Florida.
