Cougars History

The University of Houston, established in 1927, is a major public research institution in Texas. Its athletic programs, known as the Cougars, are independently funded through ticket sales, sponsorships, and media revenue.

Cougars Football

Houston’s football program, founded in 1946, competes in the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars have appeared in 30 bowl games, winning 13. The team has experienced notable success, including a national championship claim in 1984. Legendary coaches include Bill Yeoman, who introduced the Veer offense, and Tom Herman.

Shasta

Shasta, the University of Houston’s costumed cougar mascot, represents the fierce spirit of the Cougars. The live mascot tradition began in 1947, but the current focus is on the costumed version.
