Terrapins History

The University of Maryland, founded in 1856, is a flagship public institution. Its athletic programs, known as the Terrapins, are self-funded.

Terrapins Football

Maryland’s football program, established in 1892, competes in the Big Ten Conference. The Terrapins claim one national championship (1953) and have appeared in 27 bowl games, winning 12. Notable coaches include Jim Tatum and Ralph Friedgen.

Testudo

Testudo, a diamondback terrapin, is Maryland’s beloved mascot. A live statue of Testudo also stands on campus as a symbol of perseverance and determination.
