Spartans History

Michigan State University, founded in 1855, is a major public research institution. Its athletic programs, known as the Spartans, are funded independently.

Spartans Football

Michigan State’s football program, established in 1896, competes in the Big Ten Conference. The Spartans claim six national championships and have appeared in 30 bowl games, winning 16. Notable coaches include Duffy Daugherty and Mark Dantonio.

Sparty

Sparty, the costumed Spartan warrior mascot, embodies the university’s strength and pride. Sparty is a multiple-time winner of national mascot championships.
