Panthers History
The University of Pittsburgh, established in 1787, is a historic institution with a strong athletic tradition. The Panthers’ programs are self-sustaining, funded through athletic revenues.
Panthers Football
Pittsburgh’s football program, founded in 1890, is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Panthers claim nine national championships, the most recent in 1976 under Coach Johnny Majors. They’ve appeared in 37 bowl games, winning 14. The program has produced many NFL stars, including Dan Marino, Larry Fitzgerald, and Aaron Donald.
Roc the Panther
Roc the Panther, Pitt’s costumed mascot, energizes fans at games and university events. The Panther symbolizes strength and agility, traits the university aims to reflect in its athletic programs.
