Rutgers University, chartered in 1766, is one of the oldest universities in the United States. The Scarlet Knights are proud to operate independently from student fees and state taxes, relying on their athletic revenue.
Scarlet Knights Football
Rutgers played in the first-ever intercollegiate football game in 1869, making it the birthplace of college football. Competing in the Big Ten Conference, Rutgers has participated in 11 bowl games, winning six. The program has seen notable coaches like Greg Schiano, who led the team to a period of resurgence.
The Scarlet Knight
The Scarlet Knight, Rutgers’ mascot, debuted in 1955, replacing earlier mascots. Dressed in medieval knight’s armor, the mascot symbolizes the university’s fighting spirit and resilience.
