Tar Heel History
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was founded in 1789, making it the oldest public university in the United States. UNC’s athletic programs are a source of pride, and its teams, known as the Tar Heels, compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The university’s sports programs are largely funded by ticket sales, media rights, and sponsorships, without relying heavily on state funds or tuition.

Tar Heel Football
North Carolina has a long football history, with over 130 seasons played. While the Tar Heels have claimed several conference championships, they have not won a national title since the 1950s. The team has appeared in 38 bowl games, winning 15. UNC has produced numerous NFL players, and its rivalry with teams like Duke and NC State is a major highlight of the college football season.

Rameses
UNC’s mascot is Rameses, a ram symbolizing strength and leadership. The live mascot, Rameses, often makes appearances at games and campus events, embodying the spirit of the university. The ram is a fitting tribute to the Tar Heel nickname, as the term “Tar Heel” originated from North Carolina’s history of producing tar, pitch, and turpentine.
